China's Exports of Onion and Shallot Soar to $50M in June 2023
China Dry Onion Exports
In June 2023, exports of onions and shallots from China surged to 95K tons, growing by 38% against the previous month. Overall, total exports indicated a noticeable increase from June 2022 to June 2023: its volume increased at an average monthly rate of +2.3% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on June 2023 figures, exports increased by +69.1% against February 2023 indices.
In value terms, onion and shallot exports surged to $50M (IndexBox estimates) in June 2023. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern.

Exports by Country
Vietnam (26K tons), Japan (20K tons) and Malaysia (9.5K tons) were the main destinations of onion and shallot exports from China, with a combined 58% share of total exports. Thailand and South Korea lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 11%.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the biggest increases were in South Korea (with a CAGR of +8.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Vietnam ($24M) remains the key foreign market for onion and shallot exports from China, comprising 47% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($8.6M), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 5.7% share.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value to Vietnam was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Japan (-3.1% per month) and Malaysia (+4.8% per month).
Export Prices by Country
In June 2023, the dry onion price amounted to $524 per ton (FOB, China), declining by -4.7% against the previous month. Overall, the export price recorded a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in February 2023 an increase of 11% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $727 per ton in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to June 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In June 2023, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($911 per ton), while the average price for exports to Mongolia ($113 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Pakistan (+4.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
