In August 2023, the average import price for melons (including watermelons) and papaws (papayas); freshes amounted to $633 per ton, dropping by -19.8% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in October 2022 an increase of 79% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $1,746 per ton in February 2023; however, from March 2023 to August 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Spain ($967 per ton), while the price for Greece ($448 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (+1.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average export price for melons (including watermelons) and papaws (papayas); freshes amounted to $779 per ton, growing by 8.3% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 41%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $861 per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($1,380 per ton), while the average price for exports to Ukraine ($602 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (+42.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
