Which Country Consumes the Most Melon in the World?

Global melon consumption amounted to 29,934 thousand tonnes in 2015, coming up by +1.0% against the previous year level. Overall, the global melon consumption indicated a moderate growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, was relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +0.5%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010, when the output figure increased by +19% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global melon consumption attained its maximum volume of 31,859 thousand tonnes in 2011. From 2012 to 2015, the total melon consumption growth failed to regain its strength.

Global Melon Consumption

With nearly 15,648 thousand tonnes, China became the world’s leading melon consuming country, comprising 51% of global consumption. The other major consumers were Turkey (1,704 thousand tonnes) and Iran (1,496 thousand tonnes), with a share of 6% and 5%, respectively. Moreover, melon consumption in China surpassed the figures recorded by Turkey ninefold. They were followed by India with a 3% of global consumption share and Egypt with a 3% share.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of melon consumption in China stood at +1.2%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Turkey (+0.3% per year) and Iran (-1.3% per year).

The highest levels of melon per capita consumption was registered in Turkey (21.66 kg/year), followed by Iran (18.92 kg/year), Egypt (11.32 kg/year), China (11.12 kg/year) and India (0.80 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of melon was estimated at 5.31 kg/year in 2015.

In India, per capita melon consumption has grown modestly (+1.3% per year) in recent years. In 2015, India per capita consumption reached 21.66 kg/year as compared with 0.72 kg/year in 2007.
