Which Country Eats the Most Papayas in the World?

Global papaya consumption amounted to 13,085 thousand tonnes in 2015, growing by +3.5% against the previous year level. Overall, the global papaya consumption indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.1%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2009, when the output figure increased by +7% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global papaya consumption reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Global Papayas Consumption

With nearly 5,767 thousand tonnes, India became the world’s leading papaya consuming country, making up 44% of global consumption. The other major consumers were Brazil (1,614 thousand tonnes) and Nigeria (883 thousand tonnes), with a share of 12% and 7%, respectively. Moreover, papaya consumption in India surpassed the figures recorded by Brazil fourfold. They were followed by Indonesia with a 6% of global consumption share and the Dominican Republic with a 6% share.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of papaya consumption in India stood at +9.0%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Brazil (-1.2% per year) and Nigeria (+1.8% per year).

The highest levels of papaya per capita consumption was registered in the Dominican Republic (73.11 kg/year), followed by Brazil (7.76 kg/year), Nigeria (4.85 kg/year), India (4.40 kg/year) and Indonesia (3.18 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of papaya was estimated at 1.54 kg/year in 2015.

In India, per capita papaya consumption has grown noticably (+7.6% per year) in recent years. In 2015, India per capita consumption reached 73.11 kg/year as compared with 2.46 kg/year in 2007.
