The French papaya market expanded sharply to $X in 2021, surging by 12% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +68.1% against 2013 indices. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of papayas, when their volume decreased by -47.7% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded tangible growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 392%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then shrank notably in the following year.
In value terms, papaya exports contracted notably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Exports by Country
Switzerland (X tons), Spain (X tons) and the UK (X tons) were the main destinations of papaya exports from France, together accounting for 76% of total exports. These countries were followed by Portugal, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Italy and Germany, which together accounted for a further 22%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Portugal (with a CAGR of +147.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for papaya exported from France were Switzerland ($X), Spain ($X) and the UK ($X), together comprising 72% of total exports. These countries were followed by Portugal, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Italy and Germany, which together accounted for a further 26%.
Portugal, with a CAGR of +142.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average papaya export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a slight downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 14% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the UK ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+2.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Papaya Imports
Imports into France
After seven years of growth, supplies from abroad of papayas decreased by -15.4% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 56%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then declined rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, papaya imports declined to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded notable growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 67% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then declined in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Brazil (X tons) constituted the largest papaya supplier to France, accounting for a 61% share of total imports. Moreover, papaya imports from Brazil exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Spain (X tons), twofold. The Netherlands (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Brazil stood at +2.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+67.1% per year) and the Netherlands (+45.0% per year).
In value terms, Brazil ($X) constituted the largest supplier of papaya to France, comprising 55% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Spain ($X), with a 23% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Brazil was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+64.0% per year) and the Netherlands (+39.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average papaya import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 6.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a mild decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the average import price increased by 6.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while the price for Morocco ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ecuador (+9.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
