Price for Butter and Dairy Spreads in Australia (CIF) - 2023

The average butter and dairy spreads import price stood at $5,741 per ton in August 2023, surging by 15% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, saw a slight shrinkage. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $6,774 per ton in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to August 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Ireland ($8,123 per ton), while the price for New Zealand ($5,290 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ireland (+0.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

Price for Butter and Dairy Spreads in Australia (FOB) - 2022

The average butter and dairy spreads export price stood at $5,271 per ton in 2022, growing by 1.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, butter and dairy spreads export price increased by +13.4% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 51% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $6,080 per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($6,910 per ton), while the average price for exports to New Zealand ($3,722 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Russia (+24.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Butter and Dairy Spreads in Australia

In 2022, approx. 31K tons of butter and dairy spreads were imported into Australia; rising by 8.2% on the previous year. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern.

In value terms, butter and dairy spreads imports soared to $193M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of butter and dairy spreads, when their volume decreased by -38.2% to 12K tons. In general, total exports indicated a slight increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +3.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 63% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 20K tons, and then declined markedly in the following year.

In value terms, butter and dairy spreads exports shrank sharply to $64M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 82%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $101M, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.
