Preserved Sweet Corn Price in South Africa (FOB) - 2023

In July 2023, the average preserved sweet corn export price amounted to $1,360 per ton, rising by 14% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in October 2022 an increase of 59% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in July 2023.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Malawi ($4,325 per ton), while the average price for exports to Swaziland ($1,020 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malawi (+8.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Preserved Sweet Corn Price in South Africa (CIF) - 2022

The average preserved sweet corn import price stood at $1,349 per ton in 2022, waning by -2.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a slight shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the average import price increased by 29%. The import price peaked at $1,539 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cyprus ($5,931 per ton), while the price for China ($1,004 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+4.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

Preserved Sweet Corn Exports in South Africa

After three years of growth, shipments abroad of sweet corn prepared or preserved decreased by -11.8% to 831 tons in 2022. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 36%.

In value terms, preserved sweet corn exports contracted significantly to $1.1M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 17% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $1.3M, and then fell markedly in the following year.

In value terms, preserved sweet corn imports dropped slightly to $191K in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, faced a dramatic contraction.
