Canned Vegetable Exports

Exports from South Africa

In 2022, overseas shipments of canned vegetables increased by 11% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 29% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, canned vegetable exports soared to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Botswana (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons) were the main destinations of canned vegetable exports from South Africa, together comprising 61% of total exports. Swaziland, Lesotho, Zambia and Mozambique lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 27%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Lesotho (with a CAGR of +8.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for canned vegetable exported from South Africa were Botswana ($X), Zimbabwe ($X) and Namibia ($X), with a combined 64% share of total exports. Swaziland, Lesotho, Zambia and Mozambique lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 24%.

Lesotho, with a CAGR of +6.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average canned vegetable export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 8.5% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 20%. The export price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Swaziland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Swaziland (+6.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into South Africa

In 2022, the amount of canned vegetables imported into South Africa fell to X tons, shrinking by -10.4% against 2021 figures. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 62% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, canned vegetable imports declined to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then declined modestly in the following year.

In 2022, Italy (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of canned vegetable to South Africa, accounting for a 73% share of total imports. Moreover, canned vegetable imports from Italy exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), ninefold. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%.
