Packaging Materials Price in China (CIF) - 2022

The average packaging materials import price stood at $664 per ton in 2022, increasing by 3.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a perceptible descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $1,139 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Finland ($1,152 per ton), while the price for Vietnam ($425 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lao People's Democratic Republic (+11.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Packaging Materials Price in China (FOB) - 2022

The average packaging materials export price stood at $1,354 per ton in 2022, declining by -3.1% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average export price increased by 11%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $1,397 per ton, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($1,783 per ton), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($1,062 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to India (+4.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Packaging Materials Imports in China

In 2022, purchases abroad of packaging materials decreased by -14.5% to 7.7M tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, imports, however, recorded a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 116%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 9.8M tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, packaging materials imports reduced to $5.1B in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated significant growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +20.0% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +72.6% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 64%.

Packaging Materials Exports in China

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of packaging materials, when their volume increased by 56% to 4M tons. Overall, total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +12.9% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, packaging materials exports surged to $5.4B in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +18.3% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +65.5% against 2019 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
