Price for Printing and Writing Paper in Nigeria (CIF) - 2022

The average printing and writing paper import price stood at $1,421 per ton in 2022, growing by 74% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($2,295 per ton), while the price for Thailand ($847 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+9.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Price for Printing and Writing Paper in Nigeria (FOB) - 2022

The average printing and writing paper export price stood at $570 per ton in 2022, leveling off at the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the average export price increased by 11%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $1,605 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Liberia ($1,868 per ton), while the average price for exports to Benin ($737 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Liberia (+93.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports of Printing and Writing Paper in Nigeria

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of printing and writing paper, when their volume decreased by -40.7% to 329K tons. Over the period under review, imports recorded a slight decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 33%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 554K tons, and then contracted notably in the following year.

In value terms, printing and writing paper imports totaled $467M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +17.1% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +60.4% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 35% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In 2022, the amount of printing and writing paper exported from Nigeria stood at 628 tons, with an increase of 1.9% against the previous year. Overall, exports, however, saw a pronounced downturn.

In value terms, printing and writing paper exports totaled $358K in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a pronounced curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 12%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $428K. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
