Melon Price in Latvia (CIF) - 2023
In September 2023, the average melon import price amounted to $509 per ton, dropping by -2.6% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price showed a pronounced decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in November 2022 when the average import price increased by 61% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $1,903 per ton in March 2023; however, from April 2023 to September 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was Lithuania ($2,697 per ton), while the price for Kazakhstan ($403 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lithuania (+9.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Melon Price in Latvia (FOB) - 2023
In September 2023, the average melon export price amounted to $593 per ton, which is down by -3% against the previous month. In general, the export price showed a mild setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in December 2022 when the average export price increased by 50% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $2,129 per ton in March 2023; however, from April 2023 to September 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major foreign markets. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was Estonia ($601 per ton), while the average price for exports to Lithuania totaled $586 per ton.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Lithuania (-1.0%).
Melon Imports in Latvia
After three years of growth, purchases abroad of melons decreased by -21.7% to 5.9K tons in 2022. Overall, imports saw a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 9.5% against the previous year.
In value terms, melon imports contracted slightly to $5.3M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $5.4M, and then fell in the following year.
