In September 2023, the average MDF import price amounted to $622 per cubic meter, reducing by -2.3% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in December 2022 an increase of 7% against the previous month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $709 per cubic meter. From January 2023 to September 2023, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was Ireland ($892 per cubic meter), while the price for Ukraine ($451 per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Latvia (+0.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
MDF Price in Estonia (FOB) - 2023
In September 2023, the average MDF export price amounted to $1,249 per cubic meter, with an increase of 4.3% against the previous month. In general, export price indicated temperate growth from September 2022 to September 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +3.1% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on September 2023 figures, MDF export price increased by +14.1% against April 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2023 an increase of 35% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum in September 2023.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was Finland ($1,952 per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($651 per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Denmark (+8.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
MDF Imports in Estonia
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of MDF, when their volume decreased by -15.5% to 31K cubic meters. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at 36K cubic meters in 2021, and then dropped notably in the following year.
In value terms, MDF imports contracted to $20M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +15.5% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +54.3% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 26%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $20M, leveling off in the following year.

The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 11%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 18K cubic meters, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, MDF exports totaled $12M in 2022. In general, total exports indicated prominent growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +14.2% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +49.0% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 24%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
