Which Country Imports the Most Wood Fiber Board in the World?

IndexBox has just published a new report "World: Fiber Board Of Wood Or Other Ligneous Materials - Market Report. Analysis and Forecast to 2025". Here is a summary of the report's key findings.

In 2016, the global imports of fiberboard amounted to 17M tonnes, coming up by 4% against the previous year figure. Overall, it indicated a strong increase from 2007 to 2016: the total imports volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2016, fiberboard imports increased by +32.5% against its level of 2008. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2008, when it surged by 34% against the previous year level. Over the period under review, global fiberboard imports reached its maximum volume in 2016, and are expected to retain its growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, fiberboard imports totaled $8.7B in 2016. In general, fiberboard imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, global fiberboard imports attained its maximum level of $9.8B in 2014- however, from 2015 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Fiberboard Imports By Country

In 2016, the Netherlands (2.6M tonnes), followed by the U.S. (1.7M tonnes) represented the major importers of fiberboard, together comprising 25% of total imports. The following importers - Iran (773K tonnes), Germany (622K tonnes), Saudi Arabia (570K tonnes), the UK (563K tonnes), Italy (529K tonnes), France (510K tonnes), Canada (490K tonnes), Russia (400K tonnes), Poland (382K tonnes), and United Arab Emirates (372K tonnes) together made up 30% of total imports.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of fiberboard imports, among the main importing countries, was attained by the Netherlands (+78.2% per year), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, the U.S. ($1.2B) constitutes the largest market for imported fiberboard worldwide, making up 14% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Canada ($431M), with the share of 5% of global imports. It was followed by Germany, with the share of 5%.

In the U.S., fiberboard imports expanded at an average annual rate of +0.2% over the period from 2007-2016. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Canada (+0.1% per year) and Germany (+0.2% per year).

Fiberboard Import Prices By Country

In 2016, the average import price for fiberboard amounted to $508 per tonne, descending by -5.0% against the previous year. In general, fiberboard import price continues to indicate a deep descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013, when import increased by 8% year-to-year. Over the period under review, average fiberboard import price reached its maximum level of $918 per tonne in 2007- however, from 2008 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Import prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest import prices was Canada ($879 per tonne), while the Netherlands ($111 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of fiberboard import prices was attained by Saudi Arabia (+1.7% per year), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
