Garlic Price in the United States (CIF) - 2023

In August 2023, the average garlic import price amounted to $2,503 per ton, increasing by 23% against the previous month. Over the period from August 2022 to August 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.7%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Spain ($3,423 per ton), while the price for Argentina ($1,044 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+4.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Garlic Price in the United States (FOB) - 2023

In August 2023, the average garlic export price amounted to $5,974 per ton, picking up by 6.8% against the previous month. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in February 2023 when the average export price increased by 19% month-to-month. The export price peaked at $6,927 per ton in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to August 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major export markets. In August 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices to Canada ($6,452 per ton) and New Zealand ($5,245 per ton), while the average price for exports to Mexico ($4,897 per ton) and Japan ($5,212 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Japan (+2.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Garlic Imports in the United States

In 2022, garlic imports into the United States expanded markedly to 120K tons, rising by 11% compared with 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, garlic imports reached $243M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 9.8%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 9.9% against the previous year.
