Which Country Eats the Most Garlic in the World?
Global garlic consumption amounted to 25,092 thousand tonnes in 2015, increasing by +1.7% against the previous year level. Overall, the global garlic consumption indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008, when the output figure increased by +15% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global garlic consumption reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Global Garlic Consumption
With nearly 19,072 thousand tonnes, China became the world’s leading garlic consuming country, making up 74% of global consumption. The other major consumers were India (1,265 thousand tonnes) and Indonesia (496 thousand tonnes), with a share of 5% and 2%, respectively. Moreover, garlic consumption in China surpassed the figures recorded by India more than tenfold. They were followed by Bangladesh with a 2% of global consumption share and the Republic of Korea with a 1% share.
From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of garlic consumption in China stood at +3.4%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: India (+6.2% per year) and Indonesia (+4.1% per year).
Per capita garlic in China was estimated at 13.55 kg/year, much higher than the global average of 1.00 kg/year. China was the leading country in terms of per capita consumption, among the main consumers of garlic, followed by the Republic of Korea (7.62 kg/year), Bangladesh (2.42 kg/year), Indonesia (1.92 kg/year) and India (0.96 kg/year).
In Bangladesh, per capita garlic consumption has grown noticably (+6.3% per year) in recent years. In 2015, Bangladesh per capita consumption reached 13.55 kg/year as compared with 1.49 kg/year in 2007.
