Garlic Price per Ton April 2022
Import Prices by Country
In Apr 2022, the average import garlic price per ton amounted to $2,008, shrinking by -14.6% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price showed a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in Mar 2022 an increase of 7.6% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $2,382 per ton in Jan 2022; however, from Feb 2022 to Apr 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In Apr 2022, the country with the highest price was Chile ($4,123 per ton), while the price for Mexico ($1,522 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From Jan 2022 to Apr 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Chile (+7.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
Imports into the U.S.
In Apr 2022, the amount of garlic imported into the United States skyrocketed to 14K tons, growing by 29% on the month before. The total import volume increased at an average monthly rate of +8.8% over the period from Jan 2022 to Apr 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain months. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, garlic imports rose sharply to $27M (IndexBox estimates) in Apr 2022. The total import value increased at an average monthly rate of +2.7% from Jan 2022 to Apr 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain months. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Argentina (5.4K tons), China (4.6K tons) and Mexico (2.1K tons) were the main suppliers of garlic imports to the United States, together comprising 88% of total imports. Spain and Chile lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 10%.
From Jan 2022 to Apr 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Chile, while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Argentina ($10M), China ($8M) and Spain ($4.4M) constituted the largest garlic suppliers to the United States, with a combined 83% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Mexico and Chile, which together accounted for a further 15%.
Chile saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
