Butter Price in South Africa (CIF) - 2022

In 2022, the average butter import price amounted to $5,345 per ton, surging by 12% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, butter import price increased by +25.7% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the average import price increased by 57%. The import price peaked at $5,479 per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($7,344 per ton), while the price for the UK ($3,750 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by New Zealand (+6.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Butter Price in South Africa (FOB) - 2023

In July 2023, the average butter export price amounted to $4,465 per ton, picking up by 13% against the previous month. In general, export price indicated a mild increase from September 2022 to July 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +1.4% over the last ten months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on July 2023 figures, butter export price increased by +44.8% against May 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 when the average export price increased by 29% against the previous month. The export price peaked at $5,149 per ton in January 2023; however, from February 2023 to July 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($7,886 per ton), while the average price for exports to Botswana ($2,853 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malawi (+3.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Butter Imports in South Africa

In 2022, purchases abroad of butter decreased by -14.9% to 3.6K tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 98% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 7.2K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, butter imports contracted slightly to $19M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a notable increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -37.3% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 74% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $30M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
