The total output volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the production volume increased by 13%. As a result, production reached the peak volume of 6.4B units, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

In value terms, brassiere production declined slightly to $25.5B in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the production volume increased by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global production hit record highs at $29.8B in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Production By Country

The country with the largest volume of brassiere production was China (2.9B units), accounting for 47% of total volume. Moreover, brassiere production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Bangladesh (309M units), ninefold. The third position in this ranking was held by India (304M units), with a 5% share.

Moreover, China emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +28.2% from 2012-2022. Spain and Japan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the UK (-2.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of China and the Netherlands increased by +2 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In 2022, global brassiere exports contracted to 4.2B units, waning by -2.2% against 2021 figures. In general, total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +72.1% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 29%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 4.3B units, and then reduced slightly in the following year.

Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Vietnam (+27.0%), Bangladesh (+15.3%), Sri Lanka (+6.2%), Germany (+4.6%) and Indonesia (+3.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +27.0% from 2012-2022. China (+11 p.p.), Vietnam (+4.4 p.p.) and Bangladesh (+3.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($4.5B) remains the largest brassiere supplier worldwide, comprising 38% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($1.1B), with a 9% share of global exports. It was followed by Bangladesh, with a 7.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China totaled +5.3%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Vietnam (+22.6% per year) and Bangladesh (+16.8% per year).

Export Prices By Country

In 2022, the average brassiere export price amounted to $2.8 per unit, approximately equating the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 1.6%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $3.6 per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
