Which Country Exports the Most Brassieres and Corsets in the World?

In 2016, the amount of corset exported worldwide stood at 197K tonnes, increasing by 3% against the previous year figure. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2007 to 2016; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014, when exports increased by 12% against the previous year level. Over the period under review, global corset exports attained its maximum volume in 2016, and are likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, corset exports totaled $12B in 2016. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2007 to 2016; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations over the period under review. Global corset export peaked of $12B in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2016, it failed to regain its strength.

Corset Exports By Country

China (51K tonnes) was the key exporter of corset in the world, amounting to 51K tonnes, which was approx. 26% of total exports in 2016. China, Hong Kong SAR (19K tonnes) held a 10% share (based on tonnes) of global corset exports, which put it in second place, following Bangladesh (6%), Sri Lanka (6%), the U.S. (5%), Indonesia (5%), and the UK (5%). Germany (5.7K tonnes), Italy (5.3K tonnes), France (4.8K tonnes), Thailand (3.9K tonnes), and Honduras (3.8K tonnes) occupied the mild share of total exports.

From 2007 to 2016, average annual rates of growth with regard to corset exports from China stood at +5.9%. At the same time, the UK (+16.0%), Sri Lanka (+13.0%), Bangladesh (+12.7%), the U.S. (+7.2%), Honduras (+4.3%), and Germany (+4.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the UK emerged as the fastest growing importer/exporter in the world, with a CAGR of +16.0% from 2007-2016. Italy, and Indonesia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, China, Hong Kong SAR (-2.7%), France (-4.8%), and Thailand (-6.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China, Hong Kong SAR (3%) increased significantly, the share of the U.S. (-2.4%), the UK (-3.5%), Sri Lanka (-4.0%), Bangladesh (-4.1%), and China (-10.4%) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($4.2B) remains the largest corset supplier in the world, making up 36% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by China, Hong Kong SAR ($1.5B), with the share of 13% of global exports. It was followed by Sri Lanka, with the share of 5%.

In China, corset exports stood at an average annual rate of +8.5% over the period from 2007-2016. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates: China, Hong Kong SAR (-0.9% per year) and Sri Lanka (+10.6% per year).

Corset Export Prices By Country

In 2016, the average export price for corset amounted to $58 per kg, shrinking by -4.0% against the previous year. Overall, corset export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2008, an increase of 14% from the previous year level. In that year, average corset export price reached its maximum level of $66 per kg. From 2009 to 2016, growth of average corset export price failed to regain its strength.

Export prices varied noticeably by country of destination. the country with the highest export prices was France ($89 per kg), while the UK ($15 per kg) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2016, the most notable growth rate of corset export prices was attained by Bangladesh (+11.0% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
