Carpet Market - Turkey’s Advantageous Position in Global Carpet Trade Keeps Improving
The carpet-weaving craft is an art form significantly dependent on tradition. The materials, design patterns, colors, and artisan handiwork are what make the finished product unique, bearing the distinctive peculiarities of the region where it was made.
Carpets had always been items of opulence, at first affordable to very few, up until the modernism era and the advent of weaving machinery that came with it. Today the production on the carpet market being concentrated in the U.S., the EU, Turkey, Egypt, India and China. There are remaining craftsmen who hand-weave their product, but the recent global economic slump and the downturn in the carpet industry have left them struggling against the much more accessible manufactured goods.
Turkey is one of the largest global carpet producers. No wonder "Turkish carpet" has become a brand name known worldwide. The handmade carpet designs reflect the country's history and illustrate regional diversity; there are even differences in nomadic and village craftsmanship.
The machine-made carpets have replaced hand-woven ones by the end of the Ottoman period. Today, Turkey has a significant manufactured and tufted carpet production capacity. Machine-made carpet comprises most of the country's exports.
Turkey's carpet and rug industry thrives and does not expect any negative development in the near future. Turkey is a textile producing country, thus, the materials are sourced locally. It has liberal trade policies, Customs Union agreements with the EU and free trade agreements with several importing countries, most of which are in close geographical proximity. Turkey is among the key exporters of both machine-made and hand-woven carpet in the world, and the export rates keep growing. There are more than X carpet producer-exporter companies in Turkey. With the realization of market-oriented strategy and improvements in design, Turkish carpet industry will obviously see its share in the world markets increasing.
In 2014, the U.S. (X%), the UK (X%), Brazil (X%), Germany (X%) and Canada (X%) were the leading destinations of carpet imports, together making up X% of global imports in physical terms. While the share of Brazil increased significantly, the share of the UK illustrated negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In 2014, Turkey and Belgium were the main global suppliers of carpets and other textile floor coverings with a combined share of X% of global exports. The fastest growing suppliers from 2007 to 2014 were Singapore (+X% per year) and Turkey (+X% per year). Despite being the largest global producer of carpets and other textile floor coverings, the U.S. did not export much of its production, meaning that it was either domestically consumed, or put in storage.
Turkey dominated in the global carpet trade and took the second spot in production. In 2014, Turkey exported X% of its total carpet output. Of this amount, X% was supplied to Saudi Arabia.
