Avocado Market Size in South Africa

For the third year in a row, the South African avocado market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by X% to $X in 2020. Overall, the total consumption indicated a moderate increase from 2007 to 2020: its value increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last thirteen-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2020 figures, consumption increased by +X% against 2017 indices. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2020, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2020, the average yield of avocados in South Africa amounted to X tonnes per ha, remaining constant against 2019. In general, the yield showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the yield increased by X% y-o-y. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tonnes per ha. From 2019 to 2020, the growth of the average avocado yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2020, the harvested area of avocados in South Africa stood at X ha, picking up by X% against 2019 figures. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the period from 2007 to 2020; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the harvested area increased by X% year-to-year. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha. From 2015 to 2020, the growth of the avocado harvested area remained at a lower figure.

In 2020, the amount of avocados exported from South Africa expanded modestly to X tonnes, rising by X% on 2019 figures. In general, exports enjoyed a slight expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2012 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, exports attained the peak figure at X tonnes in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2020, exports failed to regain the momentum.

In value terms, avocado exports rose remarkably to $X in 2020. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2012 when exports increased by X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, exports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2020, exports failed to regain the momentum.

Exports by Country

The Netherlands (X tonnes) was the main destination for avocado exports from South Africa, with a X% share of total exports. Moreover, avocado exports to the Netherlands exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the UK (X tonnes), threefold. Russia (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total exports with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the Netherlands amounted to +X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (-X% per year) and Russia (+X% per year).

In 2020, the average avocado export price amounted to $X per tonne, growing by X% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a mild descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, average export prices reached the maximum at $X per tonne in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2020, export prices failed to regain the momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Saudi Arabia ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Russia, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into South Africa

In 2020, overseas purchases of avocados decreased by -X% to X tonnes, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tonnes in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2020, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, avocado imports reached $X in 2020. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a perceptible increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2020, the growth imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Spain (X tonnes), Mozambique (X tonnes) and Kenya (X tonnes) were the main suppliers of avocado imports to South Africa, together comprising X% of total imports. Zimbabwe and Swaziland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Swaziland, while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Spain ($X) constituted the largest supplier of avocado to South Africa, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Mozambique ($X), with a X% share of total imports. It was followed by Kenya, with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Spain totaled +X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mozambique (+X% per year) and Kenya (+X% per year).
