Avocado Market Size in Saudi Arabia

After thirteen years of growth, the Saudi avocado market decreased by -X% to $X in 2020. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2012 when the market value increased by X% against the previous year. Avocado consumption peaked at $X in 2019, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.

In 2020, the amount of avocados exported from Saudi Arabia rose remarkably to X tonnes, with an increase of X% against 2019 figures. Over the period under review, exports showed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of X% y-o-y. As a result, exports attained the peak of X tonnes. from 2019 to 2020, the growth exports failed to regain the momentum.

In value terms, avocado exports soared to $X in 2020. In general, exports enjoyed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, exports reached the maximum in 2020 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Albania (X tonnes) was the main destination for avocado exports from Saudi Arabia, with a X% share of total exports. Moreover, avocado exports to Albania exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the UK (X tonnes), fourfold. Poland (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total exports with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Albania was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (+X% per year) and Poland (-X% per year).

In value terms, Albania ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for avocado exports from Saudi Arabia, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Poland ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Austria, with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of value to Albania was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Poland (-X% per year) and Austria (+X% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average avocado export price stood at $X per tonne in 2020, with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average export price increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, average export prices reached the maximum at $X per tonne in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2020, export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2020, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to the UK ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2020, purchases abroad of avocados decreased by -X% to X tonnes, falling for the third consecutive year after eleven years of growth. In general, imports, however, posted significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2012 when imports increased by X% year-to-year. Imports peaked at X tonnes in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2020, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, avocado imports fell sharply to $X in 2020. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2012 when imports increased by X% year-to-year. Imports peaked at $X in 2019, and then contracted significantly in the following year.

In 2020, Kenya (X tonnes) constituted the largest avocado supplier to Saudi Arabia, accounting for a X% share of total imports. Moreover, avocado imports from Kenya exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Africa (X tonnes), fivefold. Spain (X tonnes) ranked third in terms of total imports with a X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Kenya amounted to +X%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (+X% per year) and Spain (+X% per year).

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by X% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per tonne in 2019, and then dropped in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin; the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per tonne), while the price for Lebanon ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
