In 2021, the SADC concrete mixer market increased by 2.2% to $X, rising for the fourth consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a pronounced decline. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 36%. Zambia (X units) and South Africa (X units) prevails in exports structure, together achieving 87% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Angola (X units), committing a 5.6% share of total exports. Tanzania (X units) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Zambia (with a CAGR of +69.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest concrete mixer supplier in SADC, comprising 62% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Zambia ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 5.7% share.

In South Africa, concrete mixer exports contracted by an average annual rate of -7.6% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Zambia (+74.5% per year) and Tanzania (+17.5% per year).

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, jumping by 81% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per unit), while Zambia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

Concrete mixer imports soared to X units in 2021, picking up by 33% against the previous year. Overall, imports, however, showed a mild decline. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, concrete mixer imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a noticeable setback. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Tanzania (X units) was the major importer of concrete or mortar mixers, generating 31% of total imports. Angola (X units) held a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Madagascar (12%), Zimbabwe (7.9%), South Africa (6.3%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (6.2%), Botswana (5.8%) and Zambia (4.5%).

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to concrete mixer imports into Tanzania stood at +6.8%. At the same time, Madagascar (+34.6%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+17.9%), Zimbabwe (+5.2%) and Botswana (+3.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Madagascar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +34.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, South Africa (-2.2%), Angola (-6.4%) and Zambia (-17.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Tanzania (+16 p.p.), Madagascar (+11 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+4.9 p.p.), Zimbabwe (+3.4 p.p.) and Botswana (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Angola (-9 p.p.) and Zambia (-18.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest concrete mixer importing markets in SADC were Tanzania ($X), South Africa ($X) and Madagascar ($X), together accounting for 54% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Madagascar, with a CAGR of +40.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, growing by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
