After two years of growth, the EU market for hormones, prostaglandins, thromboxanes and leukotrienes decreased by -8.4% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.
Production of Hormones, Prostaglandins, Thromboxanes And Leukotrienes in the EU
In value terms, hormones, prostaglandins, thromboxanes and leukotrienes production fell rapidly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by 53% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

Exports in the EU
In 2021, the amount of hormones, prostaglandins, thromboxanes and leukotrienes exported in the European Union shrank significantly to X tons, which is down by -19.5% compared with the previous year. In general, exports, however, showed strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 103% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, hormones, prostaglandins, thromboxanes and leukotrienes exports expanded to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 43%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Ireland prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 59% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Denmark (X tons), Italy (X tons), Spain (X tons), Belgium (X tons), France (X tons) and Germany (X tons), together making up a 38% share of total exports.
Exports from Ireland increased at an average annual rate of +17.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Denmark (+22.1%), Italy (+4.8%) and Belgium (+3.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Denmark emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +22.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, France (-2.6%), Spain (-3.5%) and Germany (-8.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Ireland and Denmark increased by +34 and +5.3 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Ireland ($X) remains the largest hormones, prostaglandins, thromboxanes and leukotrienes supplier in the European Union, comprising 50% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Denmark ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Belgium, with a 15% share.
In Ireland, hormones, prostaglandins, thromboxanes and leukotrienes exports increased at an average annual rate of +16.7% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Denmark (+14.6% per year) and Belgium (+6.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in the European Union stood at $X per kg in 2021, surging by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 48% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per kg in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per kg), while Spain ($X per kg) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+13.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Hormones, Prostaglandins, Thromboxanes And Leukotrienes
Imports in the EU
In 2021, imports of hormones, prostaglandins, thromboxanes and leukotrienes in the European Union fell markedly to X tons, with a decrease of -17% on 2020. Total imports indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then fell rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, hormones, prostaglandins, thromboxanes and leukotrienes imports totaled $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 19%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Italy (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Spain (X tons) and France (X tons) represented the main importer of hormones, prostaglandins, thromboxanes and leukotrienes in the European Union, making up 72% of total import. Germany (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by the Netherlands (X tons). All these countries together held near 13% share of total imports. The following importers - Ireland (X tons) and Austria (X tons) - each reached a 5.9% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Austria (with a CAGR of +13.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Austria ($X), Belgium ($X) and Italy ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 68% of total imports. France, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands and Ireland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 29%.
Among the main importing countries, Spain, with a CAGR of +9.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in the European Union amounted to $X per kg, surging by 28% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a mild setback. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per kg in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per kg), while Spain ($X per kg) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+13.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
