Garlic Market Size in Eastern Europe

In 2023, the East European garlic market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2020, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2023, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, garlic production expanded to $X in 2023 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of production peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2023, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2023 were Ukraine (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Romania (X tons), together comprising X% of total production. Belarus, Poland and Moldova lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X%.

From 2012 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for Poland (with a CAGR of X%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average garlic yield amounted to X tons per ha in 2023, standing approx. at 2022 figures. In general, the yield saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the yield increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the garlic yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2023, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a pronounced contraction. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to garlic production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2023, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Eastern Europe

In 2023, overseas shipments of garlic decreased by X% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after six years of growth. Overall, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, garlic exports shrank significantly to $X in 2023. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by X%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2023, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2023, Poland (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) were the main exporters of garlic in Eastern Europe, together generating X% of total exports. Hungary (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Latvia (X tons), Slovakia (X tons), Lithuania (X tons), Romania (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons). All these countries together took approx. X% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Poland (with a CAGR of X%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, garlic imports rose modestly to $X in 2023. Total imports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2023: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, imports decreased by X% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Imports by Country

Russia was the major importer of garlic in Eastern Europe, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was near X% of total imports in 2023. Poland (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Ukraine (X tons), Romania (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons). All these countries together held near X% share of total imports. The following importers - Slovakia (X tons) and Lithuania (X tons) - each amounted to a X% share of total imports.

Imports into Russia increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2023. At the same time, Romania (X%) and Poland (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Romania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. Ukraine and Lithuania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Slovakia (X%) and the Czech Republic (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Poland (X p.p.) and Romania (X p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the Czech Republic saw its share reduced by X% from 2012 to 2023, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Russia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported garlic in Eastern Europe, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Poland ($X), with a X% share of total imports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a X% share.

In Russia, garlic imports increased at an average annual rate of X% over the period from 2012-2023. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (X% per year) and the Czech Republic (X% per year).
