In March 2023, the average import price for onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds amounted to $1,049 per ton, surging by 15% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a pronounced setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in February 2023 when the average import price increased by 32% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $1,472 per ton in March 2022; however, from April 2022 to March 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In March 2023, the country with the highest price was Peru ($2,658 per ton), while the price for China ($990 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From March 2022 to March 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Peru (-0.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

In 2022, the average export price for onions, shallots, garlic, leeks and other alliaceous vegetables; fresh or chilleds amounted to $921 per ton, waning by -38.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a noticeable setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the average export price increased by 49%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $1,494 per ton in 2021, and then declined remarkably in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($3,478 per ton), while the average price for exports to Canada ($398 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+18.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
