Which Country Imports the Most Garlic in the World?

Global garlic imports amounted to 1,895 thousand tonnes in 2015, increasing by +2.0% against the previous year level. Overall, the global garlic imports indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last eight years.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008, when the output figure increased by +18% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global garlic imports reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, global garlic imports amounted to $2,082 million in 2015. Overall, the value of global garlic imports increased robustly from 2007 to 2015, expanding at an average annual rate of +7.1%. This trend pattern, however, indicated relatively mild fluctuations throughout the analyzed period.

Garlic Imports By Country

The country with the largest volume of the garlic imports in absolute volumes was Indonesia (480 thousand tonnes), accounting for 25% of global imports. It was followed by Brazil (162 thousand tonnes), with a share of 9% of global imports. Moreover, garlic imports in Indonesia exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest importer, Brazil (162 thousand tonnes), threefold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Malaysia with a share of 6%.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of garlic imports in Indonesia stood at +4.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Brazil (+2.5% per year) and Malaysia (+2.1% per year).

In value terms, Indonesia (343 million USD), the United States (183 million USD) and Brazil (176 million USD) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2015, together accounting for 34% of total imports.

Russia (+16.1% per year) had the highest growth rates of garlic imports among the main importing countries over the last eight years, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
