Price for Lamb and Sheep Meat in the United States (CIF) - 2023

In August 2023, the average lamb and sheep meat import price amounted to $10,073 per ton, waning by -5.9% against the previous month. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2023 when the average import price increased by 20% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $11,340 per ton in June 2023; however, from July 2023 to August 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($12,195 per ton), while the price for Australia totaled $9,354 per ton.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Australia (-0.3%).

Price for Lamb and Sheep Meat in the United States (FOB) - 2023

The average lamb and sheep meat export price stood at $5,459 per ton in August 2023, approximately reflecting the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in February 2023 an increase of 35% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $7,123 per ton in June 2023; however, from July 2023 to August 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Aruba ($13,359 per ton), while the average price for exports to French Polynesia ($2,002 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Turks and Caicos Islands (+7.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Lamb and Sheep Meat in the United States

After three years of growth, supplies from abroad of lamb and sheep meat decreased by -2% to 144K tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +9.6% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 19%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 147K tons, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, lamb and sheep meat imports surged to $1.5B in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +13.3% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +62.1% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 39% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
