Which Country Consumes the Most Lamb And Sheep Meat in the World?

Global lamb and sheep meat consumption amounted to 8,960 thousand tonnes in 2015, remaining stable against the previous year level. Overall, the global lamb and sheep meat consumption indicated a moderate growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, was relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +0.7%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014, when the output figure increased by +3% from the previous year level. In that year, the global lamb and sheep meat consumption attained its maximum volume of 8,960 thousand tonnes, leveling off in the following year.

Global Lamb And Sheep Meat Consumption

With nearly 2,242 thousand tonnes, China became the world’s leading lamb and sheep meat consuming country, making up 23% of global consumption. The other major consumers were Australia (811 thousand tonnes) and New Zealand (511 thousand tonnes), with a share of 8% and 5%, respectively. Moreover, lamb and sheep meat consumption in China surpassed the figures recorded by Australia threefold. They were followed by Sudan (former) with a 4% of global consumption share and Turkey with a 3% share.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of lamb and sheep meat consumption in China stood at +1.0%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Australia (+2.2% per year) and New Zealand (-1.4% per year).

The highest levels of lamb and sheep meat per capita consumption was registered in New Zealand (112.83 kg/year), followed by Australia (33.85 kg/year), Sudan (former) (9.03 kg/year), Turkey (4.24 kg/year) and China (1.59 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of lamb and sheep meat was estimated at 4.16 kg/year in 2015.

In Sudan (former), per capita lamb and sheep meat consumption has grown noticably (+2.9% per year) in recent years. In 2015, Sudan (former) per capita consumption reached 112.83 kg/year as compared with 7.21 kg/year in 2007.
