Price for Cereals; Millet, Other than Seed in South Africa (CIF) - 2023

The average import price for cereals; millet, other than seeds stood at $377 per ton in December 2023, increasing by 8.4% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in July 2023 an increase of 79% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $519 per ton in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to December 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Australia ($1,542 per ton), while the price for India ($352 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From December 2022 to December 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+2.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average export price for cereals; millet, other than seeds amounted to $1,036 per ton, which is down by -8.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 139% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $2,112 per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($2,705 per ton), while the average price for exports to Canada ($460 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+6.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports of Cereals; Millet, Other than Seed in South Africa

After three years of growth, overseas purchases of cereals; millet, other than seeds decreased by -3.7% to 3.7K tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 15% against the previous year.

In value terms, cereals; millet, other than seed imports surged to $1.6M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period.
