Global buckwheat imports amounted to 207 thousand tonnes in 2015, going up by +27.5% against the previous year level. Overall, the global buckwheat imports indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last eight years.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014, when the output figure increased by +36% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global buckwheat imports reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, global buckwheat imports amounted to $124 million in 2015. Overall, the value of global buckwheat imports increased robustly from 2007 to 2015, expanding at an average annual rate of +8.7%. This trend pattern, however, indicated relatively mild fluctuations throughout the analyzed period.

Buckwheat Imports By Country

The countries with the highest levels of the buckwheat imports in 2015 were Japan (55 thousand tonnes), Spain (38 thousand tonnes), Lithuania (16 thousand tonnes), together accounting for 52% of total imports.

From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates of buckwheat imports among the main importing countries was attained by Spain (+85.5% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the country with the largest volume of imports of buckwheat in absolute volumes was Japan (44 million USD), making up 35% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Spain (11 million USD), with a share of 8% of global imports. Moreover, buckwheat imports in Japan exceeded the figures recorded by the world's second largest importer, Spain (11 million USD), fourfold. It was followed by Italy with a share of 7%.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of buckwheat imports in Japan was at +5.5%. The remaining importing countries experienced the following average annual growth rates: Spain (+54.1% per year) and Italy (+20.7% per year).
