Buckwheat Market Size in China

In 2021, the Chinese buckwheat market increased by 0.7% to $X, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a slight curtailment. Buckwheat consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. Buckwheat production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, the average yield of buckwheat in China stood at X kg per ha, approximately equating the previous year's figure. In general, the yield, however, continues to indicate a slight setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 9.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average buckwheat yield reached the maximum level at X kg per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, the total area harvested in terms of buckwheat production in China amounted to X ha, almost unchanged from 2020 figures. In general, the harvested area, however, showed a mild descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the harvested area increased by 17% against the previous year. In 2021, shipments abroad of buckwheat decreased by -39.1% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, buckwheat exports reduced remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 48%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Japan (X tons) was the main destination for buckwheat exports from China, with a 70% share of total exports. Moreover, buckwheat exports to Japan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, South Korea (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), with a 1.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Japan stood at -18.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Korea (-0.7% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-6.1% per year).

In value terms, Japan ($X) remains the key foreign market for buckwheat exports from China, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Korea ($X), with a 26% share of total exports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese), with a 1.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Japan amounted to -14.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Korea (+5.9% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+1.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average buckwheat export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 35% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, buckwheat export price increased by +74.8% against 2018 indices. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Japan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+13.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, buckwheat imports into China soared to X tons, increasing by 736% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, imports posted significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 4,681,840%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, buckwheat imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports posted significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 2,994,931%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In 2021, Russia (X tons) was the main buckwheat supplier to China, with a approx. 99% share of total imports.
