Which Country Consumes the Most Buckwheat in the World?

Global buckwheat consumption amounted to 2,347 thousand tonnes in 2015, surging by +22.1% against the previous year level. Overall, the global buckwheat consumption indicated a moderate decline from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume decreased at an average annual rate of -0.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011, when the output figure increased by +63% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global buckwheat consumption attained its maximum volume of 2,400 thousand tonnes in 2007. From 2008 to 2015, the total buckwheat consumption growth failed to regain its strength.

Global Buckwheat Consumption

In 2015, the countries with the highest consumption were Russia (592 thousand tonnes), China (488 thousand tonnes), France (143 thousand tonnes), together making up 68% of total consumption. They were followed by Ukraine with a 7% of global consumption share and the United States with a 5% share.

From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates of buckwheat consumption among the main consuming countries was attained by France (+1.2% per year), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the consumption figures.

Per capita buckwheat in Russia was estimated at 4.13 kg/year, much higher than the global average of 0.24 kg/year. Russian Federation was the leading country in terms of per capita consumption, among the main consumers of buckwheat, followed by Ukraine (2.86 kg/year), France (2.22 kg/year), China (0.35 kg/year) and the United States (0.26 kg/year).

In the United States, per capita buckwheat consumption has grown modestly (+1.7% per year) in recent years. In 2015, the United States per capita consumption reached 4.13 kg/year as compared with 0.23 kg/year in 2007.
