Quinoa Market Size in South Africa

For the fourth consecutive year, the South African quinoa market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by X% to $X in 2019. Overall, consumption continues to indicate significant growth. Singapore (X tonnes), Greece (X tonnes) and Botswana (X tonnes) were the main destinations of quinoa exports from South Africa, together comprising X% of total exports. Zambia, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Malawi lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X 2012 to 2019, the biggest increases were in Malawi (+X% per year), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for quinoa exported from South Africa were Singapore ($X), Botswana ($X) and Greece ($X), together comprising X% of total exports. In 2019, the average quinoa export price amounted to $X per tonne, waning by -X% against the previous year. In general, the export price faced a abrupt descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the average export price increased by X% year-to-year. As a result, export price attained the peak level of $X per tonne. From 2014 to 2019, the growth in terms of the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2019, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per tonne), while the average price for exports to Singapore ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2019, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Zambia, while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2019 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, quinoa imports skyrocketed to $X in 2019. Overall, imports saw significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2019 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
