Which Country Consumes the Most Millet in the World?

Global millet consumption amounted to 26,891 thousand tonnes in 2015, lowering by -5.3% against the previous year level. Overall, the global millet consumption indicated a pronounced decline from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume decreased at an average annual rate of -2.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2010, when the output figure increased by +27% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global millet consumption attained its maximum volume of 34,449 thousand tonnes in 2008. From 2009 to 2015, the total millet consumption growth failed to regain its strength.

Global Millet Consumption

With nearly 11,697 thousand tonnes, India became the world’s leading millet consuming country, mixed up 40% of global consumption. The other major consumers were Niger (2,828 thousand tonnes) and China (2,511 thousand tonnes), with a share of 10% and 9%, respectively. Moreover, millet consumption in India surpassed the figures recorded by Niger fourfold. They were followed by Sudan with a 6% of global consumption share and Mali with a 5% share.

From 2007 to 2015, an average annual growth rate of millet consumption in India stood at -1.0%. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual growth rates: Niger (+0.2% per year) and China (+6.6% per year).

The highest levels of millet per capita consumption was registered in Niger (142.13 kg/year), followed by Mali (84.62 kg/year), India (8.92 kg/year), China (1.78 kg/year) and Sudan (0.00 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of millet was estimated at 6.27 kg/year in 2015.

In China, per capita millet consumption has grown noticably (+6.0% per year) in recent years. In 2015, China per capita consumption reached 142.13 kg/year as compared with 1.12 kg/year in 2007.
