Price for Butter and Dairy Spreads in the United States (CIF) - 2023

The average butter and dairy spreads import price stood at $7,654 per ton in August 2023, reducing by -5.9% against the previous month. Overall, the import price showed a mild curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in October 2022 an increase of 5.6% m-o-m. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $9,773 per ton. From November 2022 to August 2023, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the countries with the highest prices were France ($9,529 per ton) and Ireland ($7,838 per ton), while the price for India ($6,928 per ton) and New Zealand ($7,146 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+1.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

In August 2023, the average butter and dairy spreads export price amounted to $5,991 per ton, rising by 4.3% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price enjoyed a notable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in April 2023 when the average export price increased by 46% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in August 2023.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In August 2023, the countries with the highest prices were South Korea ($7,065 per ton) and Mexico ($6,449 per ton), while the average price for exports to Honduras ($5,703 per ton) and Singapore ($5,792 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Singapore (+11.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Butter and Dairy Spreads in the United States

In 2022, the amount of butter and dairy spreads imported into the United States expanded markedly to 52K tons, increasing by 5.8% on 2021 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, butter and dairy spreads imports skyrocketed to $430M in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated prominent growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +13.0% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +57.2% against 2020 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
