Dairy produce exports from the United States skyrocketed to 140K tons in March 2023, jumping by 26% against the previous month. In general, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern.

Exports by Country
Mexico (60K tons) was the main destination for dairy produce exports from the United States, with a 43% share of total exports. Moreover, dairy produce exports to Mexico exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Indonesia (9.1K tons), sevenfold. Canada (7.8K tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 5.6% share.
From March 2022 to March 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume to Mexico totaled +2.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Indonesia (+0.4% per month) and Canada (-0.7% per month).
In value terms, Mexico ($208M) remains the key foreign market for dairy produce exports from the United States, comprising 41% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Indonesia ($31M), with a 6.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Canada, with a 5.6% share.
From March 2022 to March 2023, the average monthly growth rate of value to Mexico amounted to +1.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Indonesia (+0.4% per month) and Canada (-0.7% per month).
Exports by Type
Powdered milk (80K tons), cheese (42K tons) and whole fresh milk (6.3K tons) were the main products of dairy produce exports from the United States, together comprising 91% of total exports. Yoghurt and fermented milk, butter and dairy spreads, evaporated and condensed milk, ghee, skim milk and cream fresh lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 9%.
From March 2022 to March 2023, the biggest increases were in yoghurt and fermented milk (with a CAGR of +2.9%), while shipments for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, powdered milk ($240M), cheese ($219M) and butter and dairy spreads ($17M) were the most exported types of dairy produce from the United States worldwide, together comprising 93% of total exports. Yoghurt and fermented milk, whole fresh milk, evaporated and condensed milk, cream fresh, skim milk and ghee lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 7%.
Yoghurt and fermented milk, with a CAGR of +3.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main product categories over the period under review, while shipments for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In March 2023, the dairy produce price stood at $3,646 per ton (FOB, US), shrinking by -3.5% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 an increase of 2.9% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $4,190 per ton in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to March 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In March 2023, the country with the highest price was Japan ($5,147 per ton), while the average price for exports to Taiwan (Chinese) ($2,283 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From March 2022 to March 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Australia (+1.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
