Price for Butter and Dairy Spreads in Japan (CIF) - 2023

In July 2023, the average butter and dairy spreads import price amounted to $6,050 per ton, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous month. In general, the import price continues to indicate a mild decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in October 2022 an increase of 22% against the previous month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $8,173 per ton. From November 2022 to July 2023, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was France ($10,399 per ton), while the price for Argentina ($5,068 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+1.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Price for Butter and Dairy Spreads in Japan (FOB) - 2022

In 2022, the average butter and dairy spreads export price amounted to $14,131 per ton, shrinking by -26.2% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, butter and dairy spreads export price increased by +12.3% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 81%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $20,838 per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($22,839 per ton), while the average price for exports to the United States ($9,745 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+11.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports of Butter and Dairy Spreads in Japan

Butter and dairy spreads imports into Japan shrank notably to 9.7K tons in 2022, declining by -16.5% compared with the previous year. In general, imports showed a significant decline.

In value terms, butter and dairy spreads imports rose rapidly to $65M in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a precipitous curtailment.

Exports of Butter and Dairy Spreads in Japan

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was decline in overseas shipments of butter and dairy spreads, when their volume decreased by -2.7% to 20 tons. Overall, exports, however, posted significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 103%.

In value terms, butter and dairy spreads exports reduced dramatically to $277K in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 86% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $386K, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.
