In December 2022, the average import price for buckwheat, millet and canary seed; other cerealses amounted to $614 per ton, declining by -1.6% against the previous month. In general, the import price saw a noticeable contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in October 2022 when the average import price increased by 13% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $918 per ton in December 2021; however, from January 2022 to December 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In December 2022, the countries with the highest prices were Russia ($606 per ton) and Ukraine ($606 per ton), while the price for China ($606 per ton) and Turkey ($606 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From December 2021 to December 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ukraine (+0.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In the immediate term, the global buckwheat market may face a shortage due to an export ban introduced in Russia. The country, being the largest producer and exporter of buckwheat, restricted exporting unprocessed buckwheat, coarsely ground buckwheat groats, and crushed buckwheat grain from June 5, 2021, to August 31.
