Hardboard Price in South Africa (CIF) - 2022
The average hardboard import price stood at $570 per cubic meter in 2022, surging by 1.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 18%. The import price peaked at $710 per cubic meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($907 per cubic meter), while the price for Brazil ($420 per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (+7.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Hardboard Price in South Africa (FOB) - 2022
The average hardboard export price stood at $834 per cubic meter in 2022, increasing by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, hardboard export price increased by +62.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average export price increased by 43% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $887 per cubic meter in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($1,917 per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Malawi ($586 per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Swaziland (+8.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Hardboard Imports in South Africa
In 2022, purchases abroad of hardboard decreased by -51.4% to 36K cubic meters, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports faced a precipitous shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 103K cubic meters. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, hardboard imports reduced dramatically to $21M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a dramatic slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $50M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Hardboard Exports in South Africa
For the third consecutive year, South Africa recorded decline in shipments abroad of hardboard, which decreased by -38.5% to 875 cubic meters in 2022. Overall, exports showed a sharp setback. The smallest decline of -7.3% was in 2021. The exports peaked at 8K cubic meters in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, hardboard exports shrank dramatically to $730K in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a sharp shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 33% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $4.2M in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
