Grapefruit Price in the United States (FOB) - 2023
The average grapefruit export price stood at $998 per ton in August 2023, picking up by 8.6% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in September 2022 when the average export price increased by 16% month-to-month. The export price peaked at $1,304 per ton in November 2022; however, from December 2022 to August 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was South Korea ($4,259 per ton), while the average price for exports to Mexico ($866 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+10.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Grapefruit Price in the United States (CIF) - 2023
The average grapefruit import price stood at $1,321 per ton in August 2023, remaining constant against the previous month. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 an increase of 116% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $1,429 per ton in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to August 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($1,390 per ton), while the price for China ($732 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Peru (+0.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
Grapefruit Exports in the United States
For the third year in a row, the United States recorded decline in shipments abroad of grapefruits, which decreased by -22.2% to 31K tons in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a deep reduction. The smallest decline of -5.8% was in 2020.
In value terms, grapefruit exports dropped markedly to $39M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a deep setback. The smallest decline of -1.8% was in 2020.

Grapefruit Imports in the United States
Grapefruit imports into the United States dropped dramatically to 21K tons in 2022, waning by -20.5% on the year before. Overall, total imports indicated prominent growth from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +10.1% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +40.9% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 77% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 27K tons, and then declined sharply in the following year.
In value terms, grapefruit imports shrank sharply to $23M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 108% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $27M, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.
