Over the period under review, global production reached the maximum volume at 668K tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure. The general positive trend in terms output was largely conditioned by a modest increase of the harvested area and a relatively flat trend pattern in yield figures.

France (115 tons) and the United States (108 tons) represented roughly 49% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Congo (53 tons), the Netherlands (43 tons), Italy (36 tons) and Poland (28 tons), together committing a 35% share of total imports. In value terms, the largest fonio importing markets worldwide were the United States ($190K), France ($109K) and the Netherlands ($87K), with a combined 51% share of global imports.

Export Prices By Country
The average fonio export price stood at $1,444 per ton in 2022, picking up by 14% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible downturn.
