Production By Country
Guinea (X tonnes) remains the largest fonio producing country worldwide, accounting for X% of total volume. Moreover, fonio production in Guinea exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Nigeria (X tonnes), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was occupied by Mali (X tonnes), with a X% share.
From 2012 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of volume in Guinea amounted to +X%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Nigeria (+X% per year) and Mali (+X% per year).

In 2020, overseas shipments of fonio were finally on the rise to reach X tonnes after six years of decline. Overall, exports, however, showed a slight downturn. The global exports peaked at X tonnes in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2020, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, fonio exports skyrocketed to $X in 2020. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by X% year-to-year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2020, the growth of the global exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
The shipments of the four major exporters of fonio, namely Guinea, Cote d'Ivoire, Senegal and Burkina Faso, represented more than two-thirds of total export. The following exporters - Belgium (X tonnes), Spain (X tonnes), France (X tonnes), Italy (X tonnes), Germany (X tonnes) and the United States (X tonnes) - together made up X% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2020, the biggest increases were in Cote d'Ivoire (+X%), while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Guinea ($X), Burkina Faso ($X) and Italy ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2020, with a combined X% share of global exports. These countries were followed by Belgium, Spain, Cote d'Ivoire, Senegal, the United States, France and Germany, which together accounted for a further X d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +X%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average fonio export price stood at $X per tonne in 2020, shrinking by -X% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per tonne. From 2014 to 2020, the the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per tonne), while Senegal ($X per tonne) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+X%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2020, overseas purchases of fonio increased by X% to X tonnes, rising for the second consecutive year after six years of decline. In general, imports, however, saw a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, global imports hit record highs at X tonnes in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2020, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, fonio imports totaled $X in 2020. Over the period under review, imports, however, faced a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by X% y-o-y. Global imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2020, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
The United States represented the key importing country with an import of around X tonnes, which amounted to X% of total imports. France (X tonnes) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tonnes) and Congo (X tonnes). All these countries together took approx. X% share of total imports. The following importers - Malaysia (X tonnes), Kuwait (X tonnes), Belgium (X tonnes) and the UK (X tonnes) - each accounted for an X% share of total imports.

Import Prices by Country
The average fonio import price stood at $X per tonne in 2020, standing approx. at the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a slight increase.
