Ethanol Price in the United States (FOB) - 2023
In August 2023, the average ethanol export price amounted to $711 per thousand litres, dropping by -2.3% against the previous month. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 an increase of 6% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $781 per thousand litres in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to August 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In August 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Mexico ($786 per thousand litres) and South Korea ($746 per thousand litres), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($647 per thousand litres) and the UK ($686 per thousand litres) were amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+0.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Ethanol Price in the United States (CIF) - 2023
In August 2023, the average ethanol import price amounted to $733 per thousand litres, waning by -3.1% against the previous month. In general, the import price continues to indicate a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2023 an increase of 43% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $1.2 per litre in February 2023; however, from March 2023 to August 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Canada ($1.3 per litre), while the price for Brazil ($634 per thousand litres) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Australia (+0.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
Ethanol Exports in the United States
In 2022, shipments abroad of ethyl alcohol increased by 11% to 8.5B litres for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable decrease. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at 9.5B litres in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, ethanol exports soared to $6.1B in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +19.5% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +70.8% against 2019 indices. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of ethyl alcohol increased by 21% to 804M litres for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, showed a precipitous descent. Imports peaked at 1.7B litres in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, ethanol imports skyrocketed to $655M in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a abrupt curtailment. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $884M in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
