Ethanol Price in Belgium (FOB) - 2023
The average ethanol export price stood at $1.3 per litre in June 2023, picking up by 17% against the previous month. Overall, the export price, however, saw a mild shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in April 2023 when the average export price increased by 82% month-to-month. The export price peaked at $1.6 per litre in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to June 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In June 2023, the country with the highest price was Germany ($1.8 per litre), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($622 per thousand litres) was amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+3.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Ethanol Price in Belgium (CIF) - 2023
The average ethanol import price stood at $1.6 per litre in June 2023, jumping by 277% against the previous month. Overall, the import price saw a temperate expansion. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In June 2023, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($2.2 per litre), while the price for South Africa ($867 per thousand litres) was amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+7.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Ethanol Exports in Belgium
After three years of growth, shipments abroad of ethyl alcohol decreased by -28% to 642M litres in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a strong increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +13.4% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 63%. The exports peaked at 891M litres in 2021, and then contracted significantly in the following year.
In value terms, ethanol exports expanded notably to $717M in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 85%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Ethanol Imports in Belgium
In 2022, supplies from abroad of ethyl alcohol decreased by -18.2% to 387M litres, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +16.2% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -19.7% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 95%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 482M litres. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, ethanol imports declined slightly to $347M in 2022. In general, total imports indicated significant growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +24.3% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +92.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 74%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $356M in 2021, and then declined modestly in the following year.
