Saudi Arabia (119K tons) remains the largest diethanolamine producing country worldwide, accounting for 39% of total volume. Moreover, diethanolamine production in Saudi Arabia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Germany (45K tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Belgium (40K tons), with a 13% share.

In Saudi Arabia, diethanolamine production expanded at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Germany (+0.3% per year) and Belgium (+0.4% per year).

Imports

World Imports of Diethanolamine And Its Salts

Global diethanolamine imports shrank to 272K tons in 2022, with a decrease of -4.2% on 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -11.7% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 17%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 308K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of global imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, diethanolamine imports rose notably to $349M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 23%. Global imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Imports By Country

In 2022, China (75K tons) and the United States (66K tons) were the key importers of diethanolamine and its saltsaround the world, together reaching approx. 52% of total imports. Among the main importing countries, the United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +28.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices By Country

In 2022, the average diethanolamine import price amounted to $1,282 per ton, growing by 14% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $1,484 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($1,594 per ton), while Singapore ($863 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Over the period under review, total exports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +19.5% against 2018 indices. Belgium (54K tons) took a 20% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Germany (11%) and Malaysia (5.9%). Sweden (12K tons), the United States (10K tons), France (8.4K tons), Singapore (6.5K tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (4.3K tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to diethanolamine exports from Saudi Arabia stood at +25.1%. At the same time, Singapore (+33.6%), Belgium (+4.8%), Taiwan (Chinese) (+4.1%) and Germany (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Singapore emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +33.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Sweden (-1.3%), Malaysia (-1.4%), the United States (-7.7%) and France (-23.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Saudi Arabia, France and Singapore increased by +35, +3.1 and +2.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest diethanolamine supplying countries worldwide were Saudi Arabia ($124M), Belgium ($84M) and Germany ($50M), with a combined 72% share of global exports.
