Citrus Fruit Price in South Africa (FOB) - 2022
In 2022, the average citrus fruit export price amounted to $656 per ton, falling by -7.3% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 12%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $729 per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($894 per ton), while the average price for exports to Iraq ($513 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Portugal (+3.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average citrus fruit import price stood at $370 per ton in 2022, declining by -50.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 116% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $753 per ton in 2021, and then dropped significantly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($1,230 per ton), while the price for Swaziland ($67 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+5.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
Citrus Fruit Exports in South Africa
For the fourth year in a row, South Africa recorded growth in shipments abroad of citrus fruits, which increased by 0.8% to 2.6M tons in 2022. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.8% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
In value terms, citrus fruit exports declined to $1.7B in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +8.0% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period.
