Which Country Consumes the Most Citrus Fruits in the World?

Global citrus fruit consumption amounted to 139,569 thousand tonnes in 2015, moving up by +1.3% against the previous year level. Overall, the global citrus fruit consumption indicated a pronounced growth from 2007 to 2015. The trend pattern, however, remained consistant, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The total consumption volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008, when the output figure increased by +6% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, the global citrus fruit consumption reached its maximum volume in 2015, and is likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Global Citrus Fruits Consumption

In 2015, the countries with the highest consumption were China (5,164 thousand tonnes), Nigeria (3,712 thousand tonnes), Colombia (767 thousand tonnes), together mixed up 77% of total consumption. They were followed by India with a 5% of global consumption share and Angola with a 3% share.

From 2007 to 2015, the most notable growth rates of citrus fruit consumption among the main consuming countries was attained by China (+4.8% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The highest levels of citrus fruit per capita consumption was registered in Nigeria (20.37 kg/year), followed by Colombia (15.91 kg/year), Angola (13.06 kg/year), China (3.67 kg/year) and India (0.48 kg/year), while the average per capita consumption of citrus fruit was estimated at 2.77 kg/year in 2015.

In Angola, per capita citrus fruit consumption has grown noticably (+13.4% per year) in recent years. In 2015, Angola per capita consumption reached 20.37 kg/year as compared with 4.76 kg/year in 2007.
