Orange Price in South Africa Rises Modestly to $498 per Ton
South Africa Orange Export Price in February 2023
In February 2023, the orange price amounted to $498 per ton (FOB, South Africa), growing by 14% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 an increase of 22% against the previous month. The export price peaked at $691 per ton in February 2022; however, from March 2022 to February 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In February 2023, the country with the highest price was Malawi ($947 per ton), while the average price for exports to Zambia ($316 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+30.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

South Africa Orange Exports
In February 2023, shipments abroad of oranges decreased by -28.4% to 662 tons, falling for the fifth consecutive month after eight months of growth. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in June 2022 when exports increased by 767% against the previous month.
In value terms, orange exports reduced markedly to $330K (IndexBox estimates) in February 2023. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 with an increase of 846% month-to-month.
South Africa Orange Exports by Country
Zambia (172 tons), Mozambique (137 tons) and Namibia (104 tons) were the main destinations of orange exports from South Africa, with a combined 63% share of total exports.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the biggest increases were in Zambia (with a CAGR of +6.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for orange exported from South Africa were Namibia ($72K), Mozambique ($66K) and Zambia ($54K), with a combined 58% share of total exports. Botswana, Angola, Malaysia, Malawi and Swaziland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 38%.
Swaziland, with a CAGR of +2.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
