Cigars and Cigarillos Price in the United States (CIF) - 2023
The average cigars and cigarillos import price stood at $24,284 per ton in July 2023, growing by 1.9% against the previous month. Over the last twelve-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.6%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in January 2023 an increase of 8.9% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure in July 2023.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Nicaragua ($48,468 per ton), while the price for the Dominican Republic ($19,509 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Dominican Republic (+1.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Cigars and Cigarillos Price in the United States (FOB) - 2023
The average cigars and cigarillos export price stood at $51,353 per ton in July 2023, waning by -10.1% against the previous month. Overall, export price indicated a perceptible expansion from July 2022 to July 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +3.2% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on July 2023 figures, cigars and cigarillos export price decreased by -23.3% against May 2023 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 an increase of 54% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $66,949 per ton in May 2023; however, from June 2023 to July 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Mexico ($89,970 per ton), while the average price for exports to Bermuda ($10,327 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Venezuela (+65.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Cigars and Cigarillos Imports in the United States
In 2022, supplies from abroad of cigars, cheroots and cigarillos decreased by -8.3% to 68K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +14.1% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +48.4% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 30% against the previous year.
In value terms, cigars and cigarillos imports declined modestly to $1.4B in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +9.6% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 31% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $1.4B, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

Cigars and Cigarillos Exports in the United States
After three years of growth, overseas shipments of cigars, cheroots and cigarillos decreased by -31.7% to 438 tons in 2022. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 22%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 641 tons, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, cigars and cigarillos exports fell dramatically to $14M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a sharp setback. The smallest decline of -17.7% was in 2020.
